Lobtuk – A Documentary about Education in Ladakh
‘Lobuk’ which means ‘student’ in local Ladhaki dialect, is a documentary film that attempts to capture the education-scape in the Leh-Ladakh region. Education is a relatively recent phenomenon in Ladakh, and the schools in this region struggle to cope up with the geographical remoteness and lack of resources.
But the results of the recent educational reforms are apparent. More and more children are going to school, across mountains and over the hills, and the region is slowly getting more and more exposure to the world outside, due to the efforts of various NGOs coming in to help out.
This is a film about my experiences as a volunteer-teacher and film-maker in the remote and beautiful land of Ladakh. My journey, my experiences, my insights have been captured in the film.
After a 1.5 stay in Ladakh, and a lot of travelling, spending time with school children, staying in local Ladakhi homes, I managed to capture the rich diversity and culture that exists there.
Three types of schools were visited:
- A Government School
- A Private School
- A Monastery School
Each of the three parts of the film are rich with observation, interviews with the authorities, and shots of children and adults who live in a land so different from ours – and yet welcome you with the warmth and grace of a family.
