SculpChair – Transformable furniture for Parsi Baugs

A design solution that uses the concept of transformable furniture to enrich interaction and interactive spaces within the context of Bombay Parsi Baugs.

This Project was undertaken at IDC, IIT Bombay as a part of a bigger intiative, “Umbartha” – the Thresholds Project, in collaboration with Herman Miller. This proj- ect aimed to look at the various threshold spaces in different parts of Mumbai. As the name suggests, our project concentrated on the Parsi Baugs situated in Mumbai.
A need was observed to encourage collaboration between young and old residents, as well as to provide an aesthetic installation that reflects conversations that occur when the chairs are in use. In addition, a stacking solution seemed to be good that makes better use of the existing threshold space.

A transformable furniture concept was derived that works as a social game, as a sculpture, as an interactive installation, and also as normal furniture (chairs and tables), depending on what the user wants at a given time.

Design Process
Chair can used to play chess outdoors | Chair has mood indicators below the seat that light up after it gets dark
Chairs can stack up to form an installation which reflects the lights as per the moods of the people sitting on it.
