Monsters in the Attic – Animated Short Film

‘Thattinpurathe Bhoothangal’ or Monsters in the Attic, is a dark fantasy short which delves into the mystical world of a little boy and the unnatural creatures that exist in his mystical village. The story takes us to a poor household in the outskirts of a village in old Kerala. Unni, a child of around 6 years old, lives with his family in a community where rituals and worships were the norm. A curious little boy, Unni was always fascinated by the stories of magic, of demons and gods. The story follows Unni in the serene setting of God’s own country as he navigates through a magical world of the mysterious creatures and the gods of earth.

The story is inspired partly from the memories and stories of the adventures which I experienced in my childhood. In this film I wanted to try and bring about elements of fantasy and magic realism and understand how those two can be weaved in and around personal experiences to create a memorable fictional story. I have chosen a painterly style to depict the environments and the characters. I have also tried to understand action, drama and performance through animation.
