Seek: Teaching Aid for Art Teachers

Seek is a tool for the art classroom, helping the teacher pick prompts for the day’s exercise with ease.

Primary art education in India is troubled by lack of infrastructure and insufficient teachers. The syllabus loses its effectiveness while being translated into classroom instruction. Children produce artwork that lacks character and is monotonous. This dearth of variety can be attributed to an absence of divergent thinking and ineffective systems supporting such thinking. We propose a design-led intervention in the form of a prompt generation tool as a step towards building better support systems and effecting change in teacher outlook. The prompts present familiar objects in unfamiliar situations. These help children think beyond the obvious, trying to deal with the situations presented. Our focus is on achieving rich variety in art produced by children. Explore the tool at keyaar.in/seek

The Seek application is built as a responsive, mobile friendly website that teachers can access while preparing for the class. Here are screens captured from a typical workflow. Seek is live at keyaar.in/salt

Future work on the application will include language localisation and an online gallery of students’ images. The generation schemes are also built to scale.
